Do You Know the Rules and Regulations for Golf Carts in Myrtle Beach?

When you move to Myrtle Beach or just about anywhere else on the Grand Strand, you'll notice pretty quickly that we love driving our golf carts wherever we can, not only to save gas but also as an excuse to breathe in the salty, ocean air - even if it's just a quick trip to the grocery store!

golf course livingGolf carts are great for loading up the beach towels and cooler for a day trip to the beach or just to pick up some fresh fish from the local seafood market. Before you find your next property with plans to maneuver around your new town on your golf cart, make sure you know all about your local laws and regulations.

There are so many communities that allow you to not only drive to the beach, but are also close enough to grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants that you will probably spend more time on the golf cart than in your car! There are a few communities that do not allow golf carts on the property, so you will want to have a chat with me for guidance before you fall in love with a property!

Golf Cart Regulations

Since golf cart laws may vary from area to area, you can find the golf cart laws for Myrtle Beach here and I've listed links to local golf cart laws below:

  • Golf carts are still only allowed to be driven during daylight hours.
  • Carts must be licensed and safety outfitted for street travel
  • Obtain a permit and registration from the Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Permit must be replaced every 5 years
  • Drive the cart within 4 miles of the registration address
  • Drive only on a secondary road with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hours or less
  • May cross a road with a higher than 35 miles per hour posted speed limit
  • Operator must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver's license and have in possession while driving: registration of certificate, proof of liability insurance for the cart and driver's license

Many condo complexes accommodate parking for these carts and houses with garages will, of course, give enough room to secure your beach/golf cart. Most golf courses do not let you use your personal golf cart on the course; they prefer you to use their equipment.
