This CRG Construction Standard Will Keep You Cool

Keep Your Myrtle Beach Home Cooler & Save Money

In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we average more than 200 days of sunshine annually and an average summer temperature of 86 degrees with heat indexes well over 100 degrees. To keep your home running efficiently year round, we’ve implemented several green building practices in addition to the standard practices of selecting energy efficient air conditioning units and increased insulation. One of which is installing radiant barrier roof sheathing on all custom homes. crg-custom-home-builder-myrtle-beach

What is a Radiant Barrier?

Shingles on your roof attract and absorb the heat from the sun causing your roof and attic to be the hottest places in your home. A radiant barrier is composed of an aluminum sheet that is placed in the attic or just below the roof sheathing. Without this barrier on your roof, heat will build up in your attic and radiate through the insulation into your home causing your HVAC system to work harder.

Higher Construction Standards = Benefits For Homeowners

  • With less unwanted heat invading your home, the costs of running your air-conditioning unit on a sizzling summer day are greatly reduced. The decreased demand on your unit allows it to run less often and for shorter periods of time while continuing to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. The outcome… your electric bills are lower! In fact, it takes very little time for the radiant barrier to pay for itself.
  • By simply using less energy to cool our homes because of the radiant barrier, we are decreasing the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere. This lower carbon footprint means that your home is greener leaving a less negative impact on the environment.
  • By adding radiant barrier sheathing to your home, the unconditioned spaces become more comfortable. These areas include the attic, garage, storage closet etc. The spaces are able to maintain a cooler temperature making it easier to utilize this square footage. This provides more options for how you can use your home and allows for a more spacious and comfortable living environment.

This is an interesting article and the reflective barrier is certainly something to consider if you are building a new house. One of the most cost effective ways to lower your cooling costs in summer is to have an attic fan installed that vents out the buildup of hot air in the attic. If you don't have one of these, do it now. Down there in Florida, I expect the pay back to be less than one summer.

Thank you. I use Tech Shield roof sheathing on all of the homes I build. With the recent increases in OSB, it has actually been cheaper to use the tech shield roof sheathing. This is just one of the upgrades that come standard in the homes CRG Construction builds to make energy costs less for our homeowners. It definitely pays off during the hot summer months in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Oops! I'm bad! My grandparents lived in Myrtle Beach, Florida. This product will probably work there too.
