Wachesaw Plantation: The history and Real Estate Opportunities.

Wachesaw Plantation: The History and Real Estate opportunities.

Let’s start with a little bit of History.
Wachesaw Plantation
Wachesaw Plantation was developed on the banks of the Waccamaw River. For thousands of years these banks were inhabited by nomadic Indians, that only left behind small hints to there existence. Wachesaw Plantation was once the site of two 19th century rice plantations. Although today Wachesaw Plantation is a private residential golf community; you cannot help but notice and feel the history of days past when driving through this aesthetically pleasing neighborhood. The developers of Wachesaw Plantation managed to capture and restore much of the history of this property through archaeological research. The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina has been conducting archaeological studies on the Wachesaw Heritage since 1983. These investigations have revealed the existence of man thriving on these banks for at least 9,500 years.

Excerpts taken from "The Wachesaw Heritage" written by Dr. James. L. Michie.  Copyright 1988 and published in cooperation with the Wachesaw Historical Society.

"Much of Wachesaw's land remained unaltered for nearly a century after the Civil War.  The 20th-century activities at Wachesaw Landing affected much of the historic and prehistoric record, but remarkably, enough information remained to learn a great deal about the former inhabitants.  Richmond Hill faired much better; it was more intact.

Wachesaw. like no other place on the Waccamaw Neck, has shown us a complete record of the past.  It has shown us all of the changes that occurred in the prehistoric period, at the beginnings of the historic period, and finally, during the development of two plantations.  Much of this rich heritage has been preserved for the benefit of those people associated with Wachesaw.  The past is very much alive.”

Today, Wachesaw Plantation has plaques and monuments throughout the development enlightening many people with the history surrounding this property. Ancient live oaks and remnants of what used to be a thriving rice plantation are found throughout this beautiful neighborhood. As you drive back to the clubhouse more and more live oaks become prevalent. Kimbels restaurant is positioned on the bank of the Waccamaw River within Wachesaw Plantation, the property surrounding the clubhouse and restaurant has one of the highest abundance of live oaks I have ever seen. Live oaks are scattered throughout this area with Oak Grove Cottages almost giving you the feeling of a small village taking you back to years past. These cottages are 2 bedrooms, some of the units are one story others are two story. Governors Landing are the only properties in Wachesaw Plantation that offer views of the Wacammaw River from your balcony, or within the units. Wachesaw Plantation offers many unique real estate opportunities within this development.

The amenities and landscape are unmatched when comparing this property to newer developments. Wachesaw Plantation features a private Tom Fazio designed golf course, tennis club, equestrian facility, pool with snack bar open daily, Kimbels restaurant, etc… The tennis club features 8 courts and the golf course is always a good place to play in a good men or women’s group. Most of members or owners in Wachesaw Plantation are very active with the club and property.
