Conway Historical Record
The historic river town of Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. It was home to many American Revolution soldiers and a large number of its buildings and structures are actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Poised on the Waccamaw River, Conway has been revitalized in the past 30 or so years with the addition of shops, bistros, and fine dining. The town continues to attract new business and show steady growth. Conway is close enough to the busy destination of Myrtle Beach for residents to work and play, yet is far enough away to come home and enjoy the relaxing peacefulness of a small town.
Oak tree-lined streets run through the picturesque historic district of Conway, South Carolina. This was the home to many of the American Revolution soldiers and a large number of Conway's buildings and structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including City Hall, which was designed by Robert Mills. Mills also designed the Washington Monument. After the American Revolution, the residents decided to change the town's name to Conway-borough in honor of the Revolutionary War General, Robert Conway. In 1883, the town was named Conway by the General Assembly. The area's early industries were centered around turpentine and lumber.
