Like Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach was settled in the 1700s by rice and indigo farmers. It is named for a former rice plantation in the area, Litchfield Plantation. More modern structures began cropping up in the 1960's, although the town is still unincorporated and its beaches still feature only one hotel.
